There’s still a social stigma around childless couples. I hear from couples who are pained by assumptions made that they’re selfish or narcissistic, or that they are lacking something in life by choosing to remain childless. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. Couples that make a conscious decision to choose to remain childless can have very happy and fulfilling lives.
In spite of societal expectations and pressure from family members, some couples simply choose to remain childless. They don’t owe anyone an explanation for this choice. There are myriad reasons why a couple might make this decision, and all of them are privately made and owned by the couple in question.
So, if you’re a wannabe grandparent who wants grandchildren please be supportive of this couple’s decision. If you believe that couples must have kids to be happy keep those feeling to yourself. Two adults in love can become an entire family without reproducing and have a very fulfilling life.
There’s nothing lacking in a relationship without children. There is all the love, respect, affection, friendship and shared joy that is in any family. Plus, there are always dogs! So, the next time you’re with a childless couple, be polite, be respectful, and accept that they may be perfectly happy together without small ones in their life.
